Elizabeth Tomos (2020) Ghost in the Machine II Plate II.jpg

Elizabeth Tomos.

Ghost in the Machine.

These images are part of a series of large-scale performed monoprints made in my studio during lockdown. Large plates are placed on the floor, or the floor itself can become the plate. The plate is then inked up and paper placed down over the top. A series of gestures and movements are then performed on top of the plate, these motions lift the ink from the plate onto the paper which forms the print. The print is then revealed at the end of the performance. This process was developed as part of a residency with Performprint, an Australian collective in 2019. It was used as part of a performance with Performprint for Impact11 the international printmaking conference in 2021. Originally designed to be a live collaborative performance at the conference in Hong Kong, due to the pandemic the collaboration took place over video conferencing software, splicing together material from my studio at NN Contemporary in Northampton with Performprint in Cozens Street Studios, Melbourne, Australia.
